Purpose: In academic and professional life, we are often called upon to speak with little time to prepare. Class discussions, surprise questions, interviews, or mingling at a conference are all common occasions where critical thinking, timely adaptations, and strong communication skills are needed. This workshop aims to help students learn and use effective strategies for managing impromptu speaking situations. Students should leave the workshop with tools and practice strategies useful for confidently speak when there is no time to think.

• A brief overview of persuasive writing
• Writing cover letters for a specific purpose (jobs, post-doc position, etc.)
• Writing cover letters for manuscript submission to a journal (primary focus)
• Case studies of GIST students and even a professor or two
• Tips, suggestions, and a template guide
 
Note: The primary focus of this workshop will be on writing effective cover letters for manuscript submission to journals. So, if you are tired of professors handing you last year's cover letter and saying, "Make your cover letter look like this one," then this workshop is for you... by popular demand!

Title: Research Reading Workshop 
 
Purpose: This workshop will attempt to persuade attendees to engage in frequent reading of academic research relating to their daily lives, such as health, sleep, exercise, appreciation of art and media, hobbies, and other recreational interests. To accomplish this, the need will be identified and linked to the students’ experience. Newsworthy stories and anecdotes of this reading strategy will be shared, highlighting the potential success and skill improvement student can aspire to. Then strategies for implementing regular reading will be introduced, to better help them overcome the expected challenges

Description: This course we will teach authentic English as it is actually spoken in media produced by and for native speakers, specifically Shrek (2001). We will watch several scenes and learn basic vocabulary and expressions, as well as cultural and context cues that are often lost in translation and can't be understood with just subtitles.

Description:   This workshop is a crash course in social skills needed to have great conversations: from breaking the ice, to non-verbal communication, being a good listener, confidence, humor, keeping a conversation going through those awkward silences, and building from small talk to deeper more meaningful topics.  Contents include a lecture portion, video examples, and conversational practice with your peers.

Based on the work of Prof. Keith Rollag (2016), the workshop will cover important tasks for the first meeting that prepare a group for success such as setting expectations, assigning roles, developing timelines, scheduling meetings, and strategies to avoid procrastination. Conflict will necessarily arise in group work, so the workshop will identify types of conflict, 5 common conflict styles, and share 4 effective conflict resolution strategies. Lastly, 9 types of problematic behavior will be discussed and the audience will self-assess if, and how much, they engage in these behaviors. A special contest will be done to conclude the workshop, with the winning team of 3-4 each getting a prize.
