The Korean Language Program is designed to help international students and scholars at GIST in their life on and off campus. The regular Korean language classes involve 48 hours of coursework in the spring and fall semesters for enrolled GIST students.
 
 

CC0003(Graduate)/GS1902(Undergraduate) - 기초 한국어 Basic Korean 
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of the Korean language. Students will learn how to recognize and write Korean characters (Hangul) before being taught basic phrases and expressions that will make their everyday lives in Korea easier.
 
This course aims to help students:
· Read and write Korean characters and numbers.
· Understand how to space characters and words in Korean, and to compose brief sentences.
· Recognize and express dates, days of the week and times.
· Understand and read monetary units.
· Speak and write in a basic way about simple, everyday topics. 
· Understand and use the present tense effectively.
 
 
CC0606(Graduate)/GS1903(Undergraduate) - 초급 한국어 1 Beginner Korean 1 
In this course, students will develop a more advanced ability to speak about everyday topics in Korean, while also learning more advanced grammar and vocabulary. 
 
This course aims to help students:
· Introduce themselves and describe their lives at present.
· Order food or a taxi by phone.
· Use expressions regarding possibility, impossibility and permission in order to give an opinion.
· Use the past, present and future tenses effectively.
· Speak about past experiences.
 
 
GS1904(Undergraduate) - 초급 한국어 2 Beginner Korean 2 
This course challenges students to become more fluent in everyday Korean conversation and teaches students how to express their ideas and feelings more effectively.
 
This course aims to help students:
· Understand and use formal and honorific styles of Korean.
· Acquire and use intermediate vocabulary and expressions.
· Speak using a variety of sentences for functions such as explanation, suggestion, description and argument.
· Understand the meaning and function of the various word endings in Korean and use these effectively in speech and writing.
 
 
GS1905(Undergraduate) - 중급 한국어 Intermediate Korean 
The purpose of this course is to provide more advanced students with the necessary skills to complete certain stages of the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) or to prepare themselves for higher-level study of the Korean language in the future.
 
This course aims to help students:
· Recognize basic Chinese characters used in the Korean language as well as Sino-Korean vocabulary.
· Read and write using intermediate and higher-level vocabulary accurately.
· Recognize the appropriate use of informal and formal styles in everyday speech and situations.
· Apply honorific forms appropriately.
 
 
GS1906(Undergraduate)- 한국어 어휘 연습 Practical Korean Vocabulary 
This course's aim is to help students better understand technical terminology in science and engineering. This will be accomplished by exploring the details of technical vocabulary and their pure Korean, Sino-Korean or foreign Korean origins. In practice, students will learn the importance of Korean prefixes and suffixes, and how they can be used to better understand key terminology in their research fields.  
 
This course aims to help students:
· Understand the meaning and function of Korean affixes.
· Recognize Sino-Korean affixes and use them in reading and writing.
· Better understand technical terminology in science and engineering.
· Be familiar with Korean word formation using prefixes and suffixes.
 
 
GS2581(Undergraduate) - 한국 문화의 이해 Understanding of Korean Culture 
This course's aim is to help students gain awareness and understanding of Korean culture from its traditional roots to modern daily life, not only through books and lectures but also through practical lessons. In practice, students will learn the keys to understanding the Korean people and culture.  
 
This course aims to help students:
· Understand Korean cultural traditions such as those practiced during Seol (설) and Chuseok (추석).
· Discuss topics based on knowledge of modern Korean culture.
· Experience traditional arts or music in practical activities. 
 
 
GS2582 - 한글의 역사 History of Hangeul
The objective of this course is to help students understand the history of Hangeul, which was created under King Sejong the Great, and the history of the people who contributed to its development and perseverance. 
 
This course aims to help students:
· Understand the origin and principles of Hangeul.
· Examine the history of the people who contributed to the development of Hangeul.
· Gain appreciation for and knowledge of the Korean letter system and language.
